Happy Saturday! As we settle in to 2019 and begin planning all of our exciting events to come this year we would like to take this time to really reflect on what a wonderful year 2018 was.
Baskets and Bags
Our mission at Breast Cancer Comfort is to bring encouragement, support, and laughter to women who are undergoing treatment for breast cancer. How? By gifting them with comfort baskets and chemo bags that will bring them some light during a time that can be very dark. Every year, we measure success first and foremost by looking at the number of baskets and bags we gifted to women in need.
So, drumroll please….
We delivered a total of 432 comfort baskets and chemo bags in 2019 (meaning we have delivered a total of 1418 baskets and bags since we started delivering in 2014)! We are so excited to see that number grow each and every year!
Community Events and Fundraisers
Events and fundraisers are another big part of what we do here at Breast Cancer Comfort – here’s a look at some of what we did in 2018…
Since 2010, the physicians of New York Breast Reconstruction Associates/Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, PC in Great Neck, NY, have hosted the Uplifting Event annually. As part of their Patient Empowerment Program, the event strives to celebrate and uplift their patients. At this year’s Uplifting Event, Breast Cancer Comfort was honored to be one of two breast cancer foundations to receive monies raised during the fundraising component of the event. Just before Mother’s Day was our Mother Daughter Tea Party! It was a huge success thanks to our wonderful volunteers who donated their time to cook, bake and set up (shoutout to Robert and Myriam for the incredible appetizers and Kathy for the beautiful cookies!) Thank you to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in New Hyde Park for generously donating their space for us to use.
The New York Mets asked Debi, our founder and CEO, to be their Honorary Bat Girl at May 21st’s home game, as part of MLB and Susan G. Komen’s “Going to Bat Against Cancer Initiative.” What an honor! Debi and Andy had a blast at the game, everyone at Citi Field was so welcoming!
Next, our biggest event of the year – our annual Summer BBQ! We were so thrilled to have so many people turn out for an afternoon of food, games, music, raffles and more! Thank you to everyone who helped plan and run the event! We especially want to thank the team members from Target who generously donated their time. It was a great afternoon and we cannot wait for next year’s BBQ!
We once again participated in Breast Cancer Awareness night with the Long Island Ducks – a fun night for a great cause!
On September 30th, we kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness month on the right foot! The Girls Volleyball team at Division HS in Levittown asked us to join them for their Pallet Paint Nite – and shared a portion of the proceeds with us. It was a blast. A few weeks later, we were honored to support Division Volleyball again at their annual Dig Pink event.
October was also the month that we finally ordered Breast Cancer Comfort apparel – and we were so excited to sport them at the Making Strides Walk! We set up an apparel shop and revamped our website (thanks to Andy!). Check it out: https://shop.spreadshirt.com/breastcancercomfort/
Debi organized a bake sale in the OR at North Shore University Hospital – thanks to everyone who baked, purchased, supported – we made over $900!
On October 21 our team joined thousands of Long Islanders and walked in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk – thank you to everyone who donated and helped us raise money for the American Cancer Society! It was, as always, a great afternoon and reminded us that we are surrounded by such a beautiful community of strong women!
October 27 – Myriam spoke to the dancers at Destined to Dance in Freeport about Breast Cancer awareness and education. Thank you SO much for having us, Destined to Dance!
On October 29 we wrapped up Breast Cancer Awareness month by setting up a table at North Shore to share what we do with the Northwell community – we cannot thank Northwell enough for their continued support.
In November we had a One Hope Wine tasting for our BCC team – thank you to Jes Landau with One Hope who hosted our tasting and to all of our team members who joined for an evening of wine, food, and friendship! If you ever want to host a wine tasting (and give back doing it), Jes is the absolute best! Visit her website to learn more: https://www.onehopewine.com/myshop/jes
On Sunday, November 4 Sven Gierlinger ran in the NYC Marathon and generously raised money for BCC – thank you to Sven for your continued support & friendship, and to everyone who donated!
What a year! We are humbled and appreciative to have so many incredible volunteers and supporters who allow us to do what we do. 2018 will be tough to top but we are looking forward to an even bigger and better 2019!
